Billie Jean Analysis

She was more like a beauty queen from a movie scene
I said, "Don't mind, but what do you mean, I am the one
Who will dance on the floor in the round?"
She said I am the one who will dance on the floor in the round
(Annotations)
Mesmerised by her beauty, MJ can’t help but accept her offer, even though he is unsure why she chose him. A ‘dance on the floor in the round’ could be a euphemism for sex, but it most likely simply means that Michael was the one she wanted to dance with during this interval of songs.
She told me her name was Billie Jean
As she caused a scene
Then every head turned with eyes that dreamed of being the one
Who will dance on the floor in the round

People always told me, "Be careful of what you do
Don't go around breaking young girls' hearts" (hee-eeh)
And mother always told me, "Be careful of who you love
And be careful of what you do (oh-oh)
'Cause the lie becomes the truth" (oh-oh)

Billie Jean is not my lover
She's just a girl who claims that I am the one (oh, baby)
But the kid is not my son, hoo!
She says I am the one (oh, baby)
But the kid is not my son (hee-hee-hee, no-no-no, hee-hee-hee)Hoo!
(Annotations)
There never was a real Billie Jean. The girl in the song is a composite of people my brothers have been plagued with over the years. I could never understand how these girls could say they were carrying someone’s child when it wasn’t true.

For forty days and for forty nightsthe law was on her side
But who can stand when she's in demand?
Her schemes and plans
'Cause we danced on the floor in the round, hee!
So take my strong advice, just remember to always think twice
(Don't think twice) Do think twice! (ah-hoo!)
(Annotations)
Take his strong advice and think clearly before you get involved with someone. This is also a case of the ‘devil versus angel’ trying to give someone advice. The “don’t think twice” echo obviously represents the devil/bad choice and the “do think twice” is the advice MJ chooses to take from the angel.
She told my baby we'd danced till three, then she looked at me
Then showed a photo of a baby crying, his eyes were like mine (oh, no)
'Cause we danced on the floor in the round, baby
(ooh, hee-hee-hee)
People always told me, "Be careful of what you do
And don't go around breaking young girls' hearts"
(don't break no hearts! hee-hee)
She came and stood right by me
Then the smell of sweet perfume (ha-oh)
This happened much too soon (ha-oh, ha-ooh)
She called me to her room (ha-oh, hoo!
)
(Annotation)
The ironic implication is that Michael ends up getting seduced by Billie Jean, despite the situation. This is a sort of “surprise ending”. One would likely predict an ending with Michael pleading with his girl (“my baby”) to believe him, or something similar.  However, this ironic ending makes the story that much more interesting–although not less tragic, as expressed by Michael’s repetition of the lamenting chorus. However, it may not necessarily be an ending. It could be a flashback to the night they “danced”… after all, the baby looks an awful lot like him.
Billie Jean is not my lover (hoo!)
She's just a girl who claims that I am the one
But the kid is not my son
No-no-no, no-no-no-no-no-no
Billie Jean is not my lover
She's just a girl who claims that I am the one (oh baby)
But the kid is not my son (oh, no, no)
She says I am the one (oh baby)
But the kid is not my son (no, hee-hee)

Ah, hee-hee-hee
Hee! Hoo!

She says I am the one, but the kid is not my son
No-no-no, hoo! (oh)
Billie Jean is not my lover
She's just a girl who claims that I am the one
But the kid is not my son
No-no-no, no-no-no-no
She says I am the one, but the kid is not my son (no-no-no)
She says I am the one (You know what you did)
She says he is my son (Breaking my heart babe)
She says I am the one
Billie Jean is not my lover
Billie Jean is not my lover
Billie Jean is not my lover
Billie Jean is not my lover
Billie Jean is not my lover
Billie Jean is not my lover

L.O: Identify historical, social and cultural contexts of a music video.
Context;
Themes;
Representations of;
(Race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality)
This is shown through;

Narrative
  • when he uses his magic it gets better.
  • an intertextual reference but re brands something we already know from singing in the rain Micheal Jackson is the protagonist showing that black people can be the main character.
  • trying to say that you should be careful who you go home with. also not everyone has to be careful of this.

Cinematography
  •  it pans with him almost like it has to move to keep up with him.
  • the camera is stationary for the detective.
  • shot reverse shot- the different stories of the two people.

Editing
  •  lighting is used to show that he is untouchable.
  • it is in black and white until he comes into shot to show that he is bringing light to the darkness.
  • we see his feet first but the detective we see his face straight away. shows that he is more important then the other man.
  • camera flash could be the paps with them not catching the real him
  • split screen
  • freeze frames to show that he is a star
  • cuts between him spinning to show that we can't keep up with him.

Mise en Scene
  • Micheal is a fully formed person
  • we can see very little features shows that he is everyone.
  • they are two dimensional people shows that people are looking and watching him to mes up so they can get some attention.
