Mise en scene Example




Props-

  • They show the different factions roles in the society and also their jobs and how they achieve peace and happiness.
  • It also shows the specific emotions and characteristics they show.

Costumes-

  • The different costumes show the different factions in the scene and throughout the film. 
  • Erudite (the intelligent) - are in blues to show that intelligence is more important than the emotions that they should show.
  • Dauntless (the brave)- are dark greys and blacks that show they shouldn't show emotions as they need to protect the city from any dangers.
  • Amity (the kind)- they wear yellows and oranges to show happiness as it is usually shown in bright colours if they are happy.
  • Abnegation (the selfless)- they are in muted grey tones as they should not be thinking about helping others instead of what they are wearing.
  • Candor(the honest)- they wear either black or white cathodes to show their is either the truth or a lie.
  • Fractionless- they wear a lot of different clothing to show that they have nowhere to go.

Lighting-

  • lighting is very natural in the beginning of the scene then as it goes into explaining the factions it changes. It is still very natural during the explanation of Erudite as they have a lot of windows. Amity are brighter as they are very positive and happy, Candor has shadows and highlights to show the contrast between the truth and the lie, Dauntless has more shadows then highlights to show that they don't need to show many hardcore emotions, and finally Abnegation has natural shadows and highlights as they are very caring as well as fractionless they have a lot of shadow to show that they are no accepted.

Makeup-

  • The makeup is very natural throughout the whole scene. This can show that they are normal people and the city is very calm and peaceful throughout this scene.

Colour-

  • The colours are very mixed to show the different factions and also the the city as a whole. This is good as they show a contrast between the different types of people as well as how they are seen in the city by the other factions as well.

The Killing Analysis

Editing In the killing they use a range of fast and slow jump cuts to show that the girl is taking a breath from running while the credits are being shown. This can show the luring of false security for the girl as we can see that she may not be able to escape. This can show that she will always be afraid no matter what happens as she is hoping for safety but may not achieve it due to how quickly the cuts are between the credits. Sound In the killing we hear diegetic and non-diegetic sound throughout the first two minutes of the pilot episode. We can link this to Strauss' theory of Binary Opposition as we hear the sound of the girl that is running away with her footsteps as well as her in the water where as we don't hear anything when we look at the killer as he is trying to catch her up without her knowing how close he is to her.
