Mock Exam Corrections

What challenges have media brands faced as a result of changes in technology? Refer to you online, social and participatory Close Study Products ( The Voice and Teen Vogue).

There are some challenges media brands face as a result of change in technology. One of these challenges is social media and how you can get any information the audience can chat about it in the comments or on forums. we can see this on the Voice as it has a comment section on every article as well as a forums page that the audience use to discuss their views and opinions. we also see this on Teen Vogue with Facebook, twitter and Instagram accounts to talk to others about similar interests and views. this can be a challenge however because lots of other people are able to get their news quicker with news articles and pop ups that appear on their phones giving them the most recent news updates. This agrees with Prensky's idea of 'digital natives'. Prensky's idea is that people who grew up with the internet want their news and media to be fast, free, accessible and available on tablets, phones etc. This is a challenge because not many companies can afford news to be free and avaiable for when the audience wants it.

Another challenge of having digital technology is that people's views will be seen as a fact and may cause an upraise with incorrect information. This is seen on Teen Vogue and The Voice as they talk about a lot of political issues that are happening at the current time. Teen vogue also hold a teen vogue summit where girls can come together and watch strong and powerful women talk about what they have been through so they can connect with their struggles and see that they are not alone when it comes to things such as mental health and society stereotypes.

Another challenge with new technology is that many women are shown as only liking fashion, image, looks and appearance. This is also because not many news or websites allow young women to be able to talk about certain subjects without being told that they should not care about those things and others will look after/ talk about that and not them. we can see this in Teen Vogue because it used to only be about fashion and celebrities for teenagers. However they changed their brand so they now talk about politics, faith and the power of women so that teenagers have a chance to talk about things that ' only men should talk about' as well as being free to have an opinion on it. This agrees with the idea of bell hooks which is Feminism is for everyone. Bell hooks says that the idea that feminism is a political commitment rather than a lifestyle. this means that women and girls can choose who they want to be and if they want to know about their world and society and they don't have to look or act how others would want them to.

How do representations of gender reflect contemporary social and cultural contexts? In your answer you should refer to your close study products The Killing and No Offence.

The Killing and No Offence show a range of gender contrasting the stereotypical norms. We can see this in The Killing as the protagonist is female and works around a lot of other male policemen. This contrasts the norms of other shows as it is usually a male protagonist that is the leader and in charge as well as shown as a powerful, strong leader.  This is contrasted in the killing and in No Offence as they have two female protagonist that are the leaders of the investigations and this shows that a female can also be a leader and be powerful and strong.
