To what extent does this apply to the clip viewed?

 Steve Neale states that ‘ Genre is instances of repetition and difference’. The clip suggests a modern colour version of a film noir. Film noirs have many features in them such as, an investigator, the crime, the plan, flash backs/ flash forwards and the slight change that you can see in the clip doesn’t change the idea with film noir. We can see that they have used many film noir techniques such as there is crime involved with Ron and how he promotes child pornography, there is an investigator, which is the main character. The clip also shows a flash back to when he was in the coffee shop, this shows that the clip is based on a film noir due to the many resemblances to the structure of a film noir.  This supports Neale’s theory as a film noir has many key features within the film and Mr Robot used them exact features and change the setting time and place as well as a single person instead of many people in a gang.

2.How does the clip establish character and initiate narrative?
Refer to cinematography, editing, sound and mise en scene in your answer

 In the clip there are many references to cinematography, editing, mise-en-scene and sound. Mr robot uses a range of editing techniques to show the speeding up of the cuts to show that Ron is getting frustrated with him as he is telling him what he has done and that he knows all about the site and the reason for the fast Wi-Fi. Mr Robot also uses editing with continuous editing to show that it may be fast and builds up tension however it also has a smooth feel to it like you are in the coffee shop watching the conversation unfold their and then. This suggests that the character is not the best at conversations but when it comes to helping others he can focus on what he is talking about and shows that he does this to help people not to harm them 

Mr robot uses mise-en-scene very well by having the main character in plain simple clothing so he can blend in to his surrounding in the night due to his black hoodie. It also makes him able to sand a watch the conflict unfold due to the plain clothing as no one will talk to him or stare at him in basic clothing. This suggests that the character is not an extrovert and shows that can blend in with the dark in order to stay hidden and also shows that their is a contrast from him and the people in the black suits.

Mr Robot uses cinematography to show that the conversation with the main character and Ron is very distant and they are only there to talk about hat Ron is doing and not why he hacked into his computer. We can also see this by the damp lighting to show that the convocation is just between them two and no one will come over an interrupt them during their convocation. Also with his reaction shots of Ron we can see that they move slightly closer the more the main character talks about the site and when he see the images that he has gathered it becomes more of trying to get out of the situation instead of admitting what he did. This suggests that the character finds every thing that he can in order to stop what Ron is doing by hacking and finding everything so they can't run away and from the situation.

Finally, Mr Robot uses sound to shoe the main character talking in his head, which is diegetic sound as the main character can hear what he is saying. This shows the audience that we are in his head and that what we are going to see is his life and what he doe in a day and how some people that he doesn’t like are ruling the world like gods without the permission from the life’s that they may be ruining. It also shows the tension between the main character and Ron due to the heart beating that is put in to show that the convocation is getting more intense the further it goes on.
